Northwest musician pleads guilty to bogus charity recording

At one time I thought I would have a hard time finding stories, but it appears I could devote this blog to just stories from my Pacific Northwest. This person might have even gotten away with this if he had actually started the recording. There's no law that you have to succeed at everything you do, incompetence could be an excuse. One more thing, read down to the end, and you see that the "investors" were promised returns of 500%!. Seems like they weren't thinking only about charity either. - MM

I'm really humbled by the sudden popularity of this blog. Please don't fret if I don't post on a regular schedule. This time of year is really busy for me - Prepping for the new school year (I'm a Special Ed teacher), garden is in full bloom (see above photo of today's harvest), and I'm just a single Mom living in the woods with a slow internet connection and lots of responsibilities.  - MM

This is exactly why I created this blog. Executives have cushy jobs, with lots of perks and adulation, while the little people  get the leftovers.When challenged, we're told that non profits pay the equivalent to private employers. Well, most of these people couldn't get jobs in the private sector. It's not like there are tons of six figure jobs available. - MM

A national charity whose executives earn six-figure salaries used a legal loophole to pay disabled workers as little as three and four cents an hour, according to documents obtained exclusively by NBC News.

State cracking down on illegal use of disabled parking permits

SEATTLE -- Our state is cracking down on drivers who illegally use disabled parking permits to cheat those who need them out of a space.

Office workers at one Seattle building say they can watch what appear to be perfectly able people take advantage of handicapped spaces outside their building.

Intricate family connections bind several of America's worst charities 

Carol Smith still gets angry when she remembers the box that arrived by mail for her dying husband.

Cancer Fund of America sent it when he was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago. Smith had called the charity for help.

"It was filled with paper plates, cups, napkins and kids' toys," the 67-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., resident said. "My husband looked like somebody slapped him in the face.

"I just threw it in the trash."

Over the past decade, tens of thousands of people have donated nearly $100 million to Cancer Fund of America. In telephone calls and letters, the Tennessee-based charity touts the direct financial aid it gives to people like the Smiths.

A Warning about the Autism Outreach Foundation

I see questionable donation tables often around my old home town of Seattle. This was forwarded to me from a local chat room  - MM

Dear Autism Community:

I'd like you to be aware of the Autism Outreach Foundation – http://www.autismoutreachfoundation.org/

This group has been setting up in front of large stores such as Wal-Mart, QFC and Fred Meyer soliciting donations to "help families pay for counseling and therapy services". The Foundation's written materials and website state that the funds raised through community donations are given to local families in the form of grants, eliminating the middle man.

Please be advised –
• We have found no evidence that this Foundation has been designated a charity by the Internal Revenue Service.
• The Foundation's website does not disclose the amount raised or how the funds are being used.
• They have used for promotional purposes the names of both Seattle Children's Hospital and University of Washington Autism Center in solicitation materials. We have verified that there is no affiliation or relationship between Children's, the U.W. and this organization.
• Parents have reported it's very difficult to reach members of the organization to inquire about grants.
If you are concerned about the Foundation's activities, please consider reporting it to the Washington Attorney General's office: http://www/atg.wa.gov/Default .aspx

I found this group’s approval to operate as a fundraising charity in Washington State at

They are listed by the Secretary of State as an active nonprofit Washington Corporation based in Lynnwood, UBI 603260726. They filed for corporation status on 12/16/2012. On the Washington State Charitable Solicitations Program Charity Profile Report, they claim they “will apply” for federal tax-exempt status, but Guidestar.org does not list them as an IRS-approved tax-exempt charity. This MIGHT be because they haven’t yet received final 501(c)(3) designation – it can take months.
However, it’s odd that their website claims they have made large donations to both the UW Autism Center and Seattle Children’s Autism Center, yet they list no 2012 assets in their Washington State Charitable Solicitations Program Charity Profile Report.

Incredible series exposes charity fraud.

Every year, Kids Wish Network raises millions of dollars in donations in the name of dying children and their families.

Every year, it spends less than 3 cents on the dollar helping kids.

Most of the rest gets diverted to enrich the charity’s operators and the for-profit companies Kids Wish hires to drum up donations.

In the past decade alone, Kids Wish has channeled nearly $110 million donated for sick children to its corporate solicitors. An additional $4.8 million has gone to pay the charity’s founder and his own consulting firms.
